Business Council for Sustainable Development
- HR BCSD promotes sustainable development
in private sector and represents business
in sustainable development. It was founded
in 1997 by leading Croatian businesses.
Member-founders associate their know-how,
experience, capability and responsibility
into a shared commitment to sustainable
development aiming to balance the economic
growth, social welfare and environmental
safety. |
Our activities
Eco-efficiency, social responsibility
and stakeholders' dialogue are the main
business tools for sustainable development.
Good practices of member-founders -
case-studies of successful firms that
include environmental and social concerns
into their business operations are the
best guidelines, encouragement and high
stakes for exchange with other members
of the business community.
The organisation represents business
interest in relation to environment
and society in matters that cannot be
individually solved. It advocates an
open complementary collaboration with
other social groups on the common task
of sustainable development.

What have we
done?
Good practices
We identified, published and discussed
the case-studies belonging to the good
business practices. Checked and described
members' experiences are our contribution
to the sustainable development. Examples
of members' good practices were internationally
promoted.
Workshops
The most intriguing issues for business
- members and other firms, were discussed
at the workshops. The target was to
enlighten the problem from the different
view-points and to look for solution.
We tried to improve:
- the management of sludge from the
galvanisation process,
- the recovery of packaging glass,
- the implementation of environmental
laws and regulations,
- the obligatory delivery of environmental
data and information from
business,
- the resources and energy management
and waste management in
tourism.
Campaign for change of taxation on municipal
waste
The compensation for transport and disposal
of municipal waste in the majority of
local communities in Croatia has been
calculated on the basis of surface for
both business and households. Such calculation
does not support the objective of waste
reduction and contradicts the regulatory
goals of waste management. The campaign
led by the HR BCSD and its member-companies
in 2001 started bringing first fruits
in Zagreb in 2002.
Regional business gatherings
In order to improve links and exchange
between the economies in transition
we have initiated the annual gatherings
of businesses and business organisations
from the CEE Region - Regional Business
Partnerships for Sustainable Development.
These gatherings offer opportunity to
exchange, compare and discuss position
and achievements among the companies
of the Region and encourage them to
improve practices and approaches in
the field of sustainable development.
Sustainable Development - a special
publication of the Economic Journal
With this bilingual annual edition the
eminent traditional Croatian publisher
and HR BCSD-member specialised in economy
and finance joined the most advanced
examples of its branch. Other members
support this initiative with their thematic
and financial contributions.
Communications and collaboration
We have developed communications and
collaboration with other business organisations,
with authorities and civil sector, NGOs
and individual friends in Croatia and
abroad. We act within the WBCSD's Global
Network and we are bound to the WBCSD
also with common members Pliva and Podravka.
Our plans
With their activities and achievements
- environmental and sustainability reporting,
eco-efficient practices and socially
responsible approaches, the member-founders
of the HR BCSD will continue to contribute
to better understanding and implementation
of sustainable development.
We will continue our joint efforts to
improve the environmental laws and
regulations, to upgrade their implementation
in business sector and to develop the
dialogue with authorities.
We will contribute to strengthening
the business case for sustainable development
in Croatia and throughout the CEE Region.
We will promote open discussion on sustainable
development with all the stakeholders
on different levels. We will try to
establish an efficient dialogue with
the government on issues where business
can offer a major contribution.
We will take care to ensure that the
capabilities, inventiveness and know-how
of business are efficiently used in
creating a better and more equitable
world.
